This is a nice but older quality glossy lithograph on thick paper with UV coating from a copy negative from an original print obtained from an archive, cropped, and mounted on a single 8x10 inch backing board **margins are included as part of the print that you can see here (see photo) with caption and photography information on the back of  Hawaiian Charles Kahua, alaia boarder at Waikiki Beach (circa 1890's?) prepares to enter the surf, with Diamond Head crater in the background. Complete caption information is included on the back of the photo with more details. It is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage and has photography and preservation tips included in the label on the back.
Please be aware that this photo is unlike newer computer prints because the original was shot on older grainy black and white film and printed from a copy negative and when enlarged will look grainier and not quite as sharp as the large thumbnail in this listing. You can see small blemishes and dust marks on the larger print. It has the unique look of a black and white photo, and is still a very nice historic and artistic print. Note: This is not the same photo someone else is selling. Apparently thereare 5-6 different images of this Hawaiian surfer. More details are on the back of the photo. It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes surfing, Waikiki, or historic  images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
Since we have offered this photo in the past decade modern surfing historians have popularized the idea that this was not a 'paipo' board, but an 'Alaia'. There were two main kinds of surfboards in early Hawaiian times: an 'Olo' (a very long board rode by the chiefs and noblemen) and a 'Alaia' (shorter boards rode by the commoners). By definition this could be an 'Alaia' board, and this writer, as a longtime surfer who grew up in Hawaii, and many others were under the conception for years that this was a Paipo board. The case of calling these boards 'Paipo' was a case of common colloquialism error among most island surfers for decades, although we're not sure if there was a definite rule about determining what to call a board that falls between a certain description.
Today Waikiki is the tourism hub of Honolulu and is visited by millions of visitors year round. It is Hawaii's most famous urban coastline and the most crowded stretch of surfing breaks in Hawaii, with beginners, experts, outrigger canoes, swimmers, snorkelers, body boarders, and sun bathers, sharing nearly a 5 mile stretch of beaches. Its spectacular hotels, a myriad of night spots, restaurants, and a wealth of shopping add to its appeal. With brilliantly colored tropical ocean colors, soft white sandy beaches, blue skies, a shoreline lined with coconut palms, exclusive hotels, and Diamond Head (Leahi) crater as a backdrop, it is one of the most photographed and popular travel destinations in the world.
Our hand printed silver halide gelatin original, color, lithographic and reproduction photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii. Larger unmounted prints may be also available, please inquire.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE:  e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on glossy surface paper and the photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from a copy negative and margins may be slightly trimmed. **When it is cropped and attached to the single mat 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the dark backing board around the borders of the print. It makes the print look like there is a margin around the edges of the photo which you can see here. Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo.
If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is. We may also have a few 11x14's unmounted of this print also, please inquire.  We want to make sure you know exactly what you are buying so we hope our thorough description of these photos will answer all your questions before you purchase.
